Libra Cluster to retire in spring 2009
In spring 2009, UITS will retire the Libra Cluster, which has been in service since 2005. Accounts are available on the newer Quarry cluster, a general-purpose Unix computing environment. The Research Database Cluster (RDC) will remain in service. If you have questions about Libra, compilers, programming, scientific and numerical libraries, or debuggers, contact the High Performance Applications team: http://rc.uits.iu.edu/hpa/index.shtml

The end of Daylight Saving Time (DST) - November 2
At 2am on November 2, Indiana will turn its clocks back one hour, marking the end of Daylight Saving Time (DST) until next spring. If you updated your computer time setting last spring when DST took effect, your computer will automatically adjust for DST without you doing anything. For more information, see: http://kb.iu.edu/data/atnt.html

Your passphrase is your first line of defense
Starting this week, the Central Authentication Service (your single sign-on for IU web applications such as OneStart) login screen may display a reminder to update your password or passphrase -- this is meant to help you keep your accounts secure. IU asks all new users, and all other users who want to change their existing passwords, to set a Network ID passphrase. This passphrase protects access to all of your IU accounts online, so we recommend that you update it every six months. Updating to a passphrase now will help increase your account protections. Learn more at: http://www.kb.iu.edu/data/acpu.html. To update your password or passphrase, go to: https://passphrase.iu.edu/.

Confused about wireless on campus?
You may see three available wireless networks on campus:
* IU Secure: With built-in security and authentication, IU Secure is the best choice for any device that supports it -- there's no need for a Virtual Private Network (VPN), but you may need to move to Vista SP1, XP SP3, or Mac OS 10.3 or later to take advantage of its protections. For details and instructions, see: http://kb.iu.edu/data/awws.html
* IU Wireless: For those unable to use IU Secure, IU Wireless provides access to all IU resources but requires a VPN connection for security purposes. For the basics of VPN at IU, see: http://kb.iu.edu/data/ajrq.html
* IU Guest: IU Guest is for conference attendees or those with sponsored accounts. Learn more at: http://kb.iu.edu/data/awwt.html

Rrecommendations for secure alternatives to SSH and FTP/SFTP
When connecting to Webserve or Steel to work with your web pages, you must use a secure telnet or FTP client. Until recently, for Windows users UITS recommended SSH Secure Shell from SSH Communications Security. Because this product is no longer free to download, it is no longer available from IUware or the SSH web site. If you are an existing user and have already downloaded SSH Secure Shell to your personal computer, you can continue to use it for free. And, as long as it is for educational purposes, you can even continue to load SSH Secure Shell on new computers from the media you currently have. SSH Secure Shell will remain on IU's Student and Residential Technology Center (STC and RTC) computers. After the summer upgrade to Vista, there will be three options for secure telnet or FTP from these computers:
- SSH Secure Shell (already available on the Windows STC/RTC computers)
- WinSCP (already available on the Windows STC/RTC computers for graphical file downloads and uploads)
- PuTTY (a new alternative for SSH Secure Shell)
For download to personal computers, the University Information Security Office (UISO) recommends WinSCP and PuTTY as alternative SSH clients. Departments can also provide commercial SSH software for hosting in specific labs or, in the case of site-wide licensing, in STC/RTC builds across campus. Download WinSCP from IUware at: https://iuware.iu.edu/title.aspx?id=785 Download PuTTY from IUware at: https://iuware.iu.edu/title.aspx?id=781
